Course Overview

This class was focused on providing a great overview of all the typical IT related information. This information included basic troubleshooting, an in depth look at the components that make up a computer, building special purpose PCs, networking, and the many different types of printers. This class provided many opportunities to apply the skills and concepts being covered through research and hands on applications.

What I learned

I learned a great deal in this course. My favorite parts would have to have been the lab exercise where I created my own patch cables using a roll of Cat6 ethernet cabling, learning the minute details of how the hardware functions in a PC and its role in the operation of the PC, and having the opportunity to see the topics described in class and in the book in real-life situations.

Shortly after starting this class, I changed positions within my company to an office oriented environment. I was then able to see the devices and common problems in a real-world setting. I had to replace toner cartridges a few times, replace the ink ribbon on a dot matrix printer, try my hand at trying to resolve an issue with a printer in my office (before having to call IT over to change it out), and even helping co-workers with common questions such as how to change the default printer. This helped me to learn the material in a lab setting, prepare for the exam and gain some practical experience.
